I don't know why they call it heartbreak. It feels like every other part of my body is broken too.

Zuko stood in the Earth King’s throne room nervous and apprehensive, standing next to Azula was bad enough, years of mistrust aren’t easily forgotten, but the thing that bothered him most was the guilt running through his mind, the constant worry that he’d made the wrong choice to fight the Avatar, to betray his uncle, he shook his head…No! Don’t think that, you didn’t betray him…but Zuko sighed it was obvious that no matter what Azula told him or what he told himself he knew he had made a mistake, a mistake that had to fixed. A sudden burst of laughter caught his attention, it was that girl in pink who obviously was trying to teach her friend a trick, and as far as he could tell, it wasn’t working. He realized he had not yet been introduced to these girls, but he found that the more he watched them the more he seemed to recognize them. The one doing the cartwheels it struck him, Ty lee! She had a rather bubbly personality he thought, smiling slightly as he saw how happy and carefree she still was after all these years; and the other, taller with dark hair, she looked bored but her eyes he noticed were a beautiful yellow gold, her hair looked like black silk, he stopped, he didn’t even know her, and then she turned, their eyes met, she’d caught him looking and then he realized it was Mai! He turned around embarrassed glancing at Azula who thankfully didn’t appear to have noticed anything, Mai though smiled and blushed a little the very thought of finally seeing Zuko again made her feel…..happy. Ty lee doing a handstand and looking at Mai noticed her smile causing her to fall over on shock, since when did Mai smile?
“What’s up Mai?’ she asked bouncing her way over, Mai snapped to attention taking her eyes off Zuko.
“oh nothing”
“but didn’t you just…smile?” continued Ty lee pressing the matter further.
“no..well…yes but I’m telling you its nothing just forget it” said Mai eyes flickering for a second back at Zuko who wasn’t looking, Ty lee wasn’t dumb she followed Mai’s gaze and giggled knowingly.
“I know what it is” she said now twirling her braid between her fingers “you still like Zuko…don’t’ you Mai?” she said now grinning widely.
“No!” Mai said defensively but she could fell her cheeks burning on her face, if Azula found out shed never hear the end of it. Ty lee giggled again now twirling around Mai
“you do don’t you, does Azula know?” Mai grabbed Ty lee’s arms pulling her close.
“don’t say anything to Azula…or Zuko, please promise me this” Ty lee thought a moment she liked Mai despite how boring she was sometimes and it seemed like an easy promise to make.
“ok” she said slipping free of Mai’s grasp and she went on to be her usual cart wheeling self. Suddenly Azula stood up
“Zuko” she said turning to him “ how silly of me to almost forget we have some things to discuss..finish up” Zuko stared blankly “ things such as “ she continued pushing hair from her face “a little family reunion, I’m sure father would love to hear from you Zu Zu, all your troubles and how you finally did something right, helping me your wonderful sister capture Ba Sing Se” she stood now looking at him arms folded. Zuko swallowed hard every alarm in his brain going off but still he nodded. “alright then” Azula said “come with me” and she started down towards a hallway, Mai and Ty lee automatically starting to follow. “oh sorry Mai, Ty lee your presence is not needed me and Zuko have private family matters to settle” she smiled Zuko behind her oblivious to the small flame she lit in her hands as she finished the sentence. Mai’s eyes widened as did Ty lee’s they both knew this wasn’t going to be a friendly chat, Mai had the urge to warn Zuko, but she and Ty lee both just stood there as they watched Azula and Zuko disappear down the hall.
“odd” said Ty lee balancing on one hand she looked at Mai “don’t you agree?” Mai nodded
“I’m going to follow them” said Mai who started to walk towards the hall
“but Azula…” Ty lee protested
“I don’t care what Azula said, something’s not right and I’m going to see what happens”
“suit yourself…but you know how Azula gets” Mai stopped at this then decided
“ I don’t’ care, I’ve never cared and I’m not about to start now…besides” she said twirling a dagger “let her try and shoot lightning at me” then she ran off in pursuit of Azula and Zuko, who was the only reason she was doing anything at all.
The path she was following Mai realized was headed right for Azula’s private chamber.
When she came to the corner that turned into Azula’s doorway she stopped, hearing voices.
“Do you really think I’d try to pull the same trick I used last time I discussed going home with you?” smirked Azula
“yes I do” said Zuko, his voice had a slight growl to it.
“you know” started Azula “last time was different…last time I didn’t have Mai or Ty lee, last time the earth kingdom was yet to be captured, and the Avatar was not one of my targets” she looked at Zuko “but now” she said raising her voice “I’ve killed the Avatar and WE, me and you prince Zuko, have captured Ba Sing Se our key to the rest of the earth kingdom, the key to total domination!”
“How do you know the avatar is dead?” asked Zuko eyeing Azula closely
“I know” said Azula now very annoyed “because you don’t get struck by lightning in the back and live dum dum, and besides” she said laughing “even if he isn’t he’s close to it , we will find him and b urn him along with all of his pathetic friends; now are you going to keep standing there gaping your mouth like an idiot OR are you going to come in so we can get something done?!”
“ill talk” said Zuko and together he and his sister entered the room, door shutting behind them.
Mai turned the corner after hearing the door shut and was surprised to see no guards by it, oh well she thought, so she sat and waited for what would happen next. For what seemed like hours Mai sat there utterly bored, maybe twirling a dagger between her fingers but still bored as she listened to Azula talk on about the war an politics, oddly enough talk of their father or going home which was supposed to be discussed had not come up yet, her thoughts drifted towards Zuko, she smiled she hadn’t felt this way in years. She was almost lost in her dreams when a raised voice caught her attention.
“what of father, my honor, and returning home as you said?” asked Zuko his voice anxious.
“oh that” said Azula with a slight smirk “It’s already arranged” and then from outside the room Mai heard the movement of earth. Zuko looked around, doors had appeared in the walls with people filing out.
“the Dai Li have so graciously agreed to…ah escort you home” and with that Zuko gasped as suddenly chains flew towards him from nowhere binding his arms and legs, he couldn’t move.
“yes” said Azula maliciously “I’m sure father would love to see one of his biggest disappointments back home” she smiled at him “oh what’s that?”…don’t have the Avatar? I’m sure father will understand”
“you lied to me!!” Zuko yelled
“oh did I?” laughed Azula flipping hair from her face “I’ve done it so often it seems I failed to notice, Dai Li take him to the lower prison cells”
“you used me!” continued Zuko “you used me to capture the city!, you led me to betray uncle!” before he could say more the Dai Li placed a stone hand across his face.
“come to think of it Zu Zu, the only time I didn’t lie to you was when I told you dad was going to kill you…if you’re lucky maybe he’s still in the mood, I sure hope so” and with that Azula sat down in a chair laughing as Zuko was dragged away. Soon the walls in Azula’s room returned to normal, as if nothing had happened. Mai was shocked and for the first time she was filled with emotions she couldn’t just shrug off, things were getting out of hand Mai thought…she had to do something, this wasn’t just about winning the war and the Avatar anymore, it was about doing what was right
